SONOMA BEAR REVOLT
The Bear Flag Revolt took place on June 14, 1846, when a group of American settlers seized the Mexican garrison at Sonoma and declared California an independent republic. They raised a hand-painted flag featuring a grizzly bear and a single red star along with the words California Republic. The republic lasted 25 days before the United States flag replaced it following the outbreak of the Mexican-American War. The grizzly bear from that original flag remains the centerpiece of the California state flag today. This collection takes its name and imagery from that act of rebellion in Sonoma County.
